Battle of the Coral Sea (1959)

Columbia Pictures
Directed by Paul Wendkos
My rating: 2 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Sony Screen Classics by Request)

Uneven war drama featuring Cliff Robertson as a submarine captain sent on a top secret reconnaissance mission. The sub is destroyed and crew sent to an island interrogation camp where they must endure psychological and occasionally physical torture at the hands of the Japanese. A woman who acts as an interpreter helps them escape. Unfortunately these interesting scenes on the island are surrounded by stock footage and boring documentary-style accounts of the famous sea battle.
