Assistant bank manager Joseph Cotten steals a million dollars and then attempts to leave the country with his wife before the bank reopens on Monday morning. His poorly thought-out plan begins to unravel almost before it begins: he has to break into the consulate for their passports because he is late getting there. This leads to a series of complications involving airplane flights and they are stranded in New Orleans. His wife eventually figures out what is really happening and leaves him. Cotten must choose between living on the run as a thief and his tidy, predictable life at home.
