The Day Mars Invaded Earth (1963)

Twentieth Century-Fox Film
Directed by Maury Dexter
My rating: 2.5 stars out of 4
IMDb
(Fox Movie Channel)

A scientist at Cape Canaveral involved in sending a robot to Mars returns to his California home after the mission fails. He bickers with his wife about his time away and the couple are apparently struggling to stay together. They move to a Beverly Hills mansion after a relative dies and needs someone to watch over it. While wandering around its spacious French gardens, the scientist sees doppelgangers, first of himself, then of his wife and kids. They turn out to be malevolent Martians. The plot unravels slowly, this is more a mood piece than invasion thriller, and in that respect does achieve some modest success. I was reminded at times of Last Year at Marienbad, also set in a modern landscaped mansion and garden, furthered by the dreamlike qualities in music and plot. Take away the Martians to give it a more adult theme and you might have a minor classic.
