Cinderella (1914)

Paramount Pictures
Directed by James Kirkwood
My rating: 2 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Image Entertainment)

Mary Pickford plays the young girl mistreated at the hands of her stepsisters who finds redemption in the form of Prince Charming. The story has become overly familiar, with literally dozens of films before and after this one. However, Pickford does seem unusually suited for the role: her diminutive figure yielding a foot that slips right into the glass slipper that fits no one else. A special note on the music for this version released by Image Entertainment, it is modern but quite suited for the material, performed by Donald Sosin with occasional heavenly vocals by his wife Joanna Seaton. The song that plays during their walk through the garden at the ball is perfect: magical, yet with a touch of sadness at their imminent parting.
