A scientist is kidnapped by submarine pirates and brought to their hideout in an extinct volcano. A fellow prisoner and scientist is working on experiments that will lead to the first atomic bomb. Our scientist manages to escape by balloon and warn the outside world. Karel Zeman attempts to recreate the look of old engravings that
illustrated the original editions of the books of Jules Verne. While he
achieves those goals admirably, the story gets lost in the process.We hardly get to know any character in depth. Instead, we are treated to a fantastic combination of live action and animation, populated by complex machinery and fanciful underwater life.
