Wiktor returns to the country home of his youth after the death of a close friend. The young girls in the mansion next door who had once been in love with him are now married and in various stages of unhappiness. The one girl he had really loved and wanted to see again has been dead for 15 years, but the young Tunia reminds him of her. He encourages her teenage crush and even considers marrying her, but it falls apart when her immaturity surfaces. He has long discussions with the other women about their feelings from long ago, leading to more rejection and regret. He also talks with his elderly uncle about death. This is not exactly an uplifting film, but it is nonetheless an honest exploration of life, love and death from the point of view of a single man approaching middle age with little to no prospects of changing his life. The superb cinematography by Edward Klosinski utilizes natural lighting and the "golden hour" before sunset almost exclusively.
