A teenage clerk in a hat store falls in love with a narcissistic young "wizard" after a spell cast on her makes her into an old woman. In fact, every character in this movie has some kind of spell on them that makes them appear as something other than their true self. She wanders into a "moving castle" which roams the countryside for no apparent reason. She impulsively cleans the castle and takes care of a bratty kid and a wisecracking fire. The heart of the story, and I mean that quite literally, is the juvenile romance between her and the wizard. This all takes place in what appears to be WWI Europe, but with futuristic machines. The plot doesn't make a bit of sense, except maybe to a Japanese teenager, likely the intended audience.
