A lonely single mother in a remote Swedish port falls in love with a sea captain. Their one day (and night) romance is told through flashback, giving it a unique non-linear structure. They re-examine their feelings leading up to their night together, expressing uncertainties, hopes and sexual desire. They take a trip to the zoo in nearby Copenhagen with her young daughter, swim in the nearby harbor, and hang out at the cafe where she works with local teens. The film is remembered mainly for its nude scenes, but they are brief and very tame by today's standards. Instead, it's a naturalistic, if occasionally melodramatic, love story of a very specific place and time: rural Sweden in the early 1960s.
