Mr. Wu (1927)

MGM
Directed by William Nigh
My rating: 2.5 stars out of 4
IMDb
(Turner Classic Movies)

Tragic love story between the daughter of a Chinese aristocrat and a visiting westerner. Lon Chaney, in heavy makeup, is the traditional Chinese father. His daughter has an arranged marriage, and when the infidelity is discovered takes drastic action in retribution. The set design is quite good and there are a couple of well-composed shots, but basically this is dressed-up melodrama. Louise Dresser pulls off the role of an Asian girl convincingly.
