Cliched but entertaining Dickensian yarn about orphaned Irish waif who is placed in the home of relatives in Scotland. First half recalls his schoolboy days, battling bullies, befriending his great grandfather, discovering science. The second half is set after graduation, where he tries to get in college, falls in love and the inevitable tragedies, all predictable, all played out just as you would expect. Charles Coburn gives a wonderful performance as the great grandfather.
