The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936)

Directed by George King
My rating: 1.5 stars out of 4

(VHS, Rhino Video)

Tod Slaughter hams it up as a London barber who kills customers for their money. The most interesting part is the method he uses: a barber chair that sits on a revolving trap door, dumping the victims in the basement. If they are not killed by the fall he "polishes them off" with his razor. Apparently the bodies are disposed of in pies sold next door by collaborator Mrs. Lovatt. One of his potential victims figures out his secret, hangs on to the chair when turned upside down and escapes just in time to save his girlfriend from "the chair". Sweeney Todd gets a taste of his own medicine in the end.
