My Best Friend Is a Vampire (1987)

Directed by Jimmy Huston
My rating: 2 stars out of 4

Robert Sean Leonard, just two years before his breakthrough role in Dead Poets Society, becomes a teen vampire after being bitten by a female vampire he meets for sex in a deserted old mansion. He gradually accepts his new condition with the help of a "vampire advisor". He is being pursued by a vampire hunter and his bumbling sidekick, who mistakenly believe his best friend is also vampire. There are numerous cliched car chases through the streets of Houston. It also makes an ill-advised attempt to compare Leonard's vampirism to homosexuality by giving him many of the same problems: ostracized by peers, accepted by his true friends and concerned parents, who even mistakenly believe that he is indeed gay. It does have a certain charm, mainly due to the good performance by Leonard and his cute girlfriend Cheryl Pollack, who rise above the uneven script.
