An avant-garde jazz musician suspects his wife of having an affair. When she later turns up brutally murdered he is sentenced to life in prison, even though he only has vague dreams that it even happened. One day a prison guard finds another man sitting in his high security cell. He is identified as a young mechanic and sent home to his parents. He gradually resumes a normal life until he meets a woman strongly resembling the murdered wife. They begin an affair, setting off her hot headed gangster boyfriend. She convinces her boyfriend mechanic to murder and rob him so they can run away together, but it goes horribly wrong. Melodramatics with the usual Lynch flair for the bizarre is immensely entertaining, if you can get beyond the explicit sex and violence continually on display.
