The story of a small-town waitress who quits her job to join the carnival. There are long stretches of almost documentary-like footage filmed at a real California carnival. You get to see all the rides up close and hand-held camera work on some of them. The waitress, played convincingly by Claire Brennan, sets her sights on the richest man on the fairgrounds and marries him. However, she is really attracted to the labor foreman and often sneaks into his midway bunk to sleep with him. The two men end up in a fight and the husband is killed, leaving the waitress to take over his former job of managing the freak show. The freaks aren't too happy with the situation and take their revenge in a memorable finale.
