Bullet Ballet (1998)

Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto
My rating: 3 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Artsmagic)

After his girlfriend commits suicide with a gun, a Japanese man desperately searches for one of his own. Since they are illegal, he is driven to the streets of Tokyo where he becomes involved with a youth gang who rob and beat up businessmen for fun and profit. After finally getting a gun, he at first tries to kill members of the gang, but after befriending a young female member begins to sympathize with them. Tsukamoto combines the black-and-white, hand-held style of cyberpunk with a yakuza revenge story to great effect. Chu Ishikawa's hard rock soundtrack amps up the energy even more.
