A bored, out-of-work young writer begins following people around London. He rationalizes that he is researching characters for a book, but his risky behavior leads to a confrontation with one of his "victims". The tables are turned when it turns out to be a thief who gets him involved with his lucrative racket. He falls in love with a girl he meets at a bar whose apartment he later burglarizes with his new friend. He learns too late that it is all just an elaborate ruse. Clever, perhaps a little too clever, story filmed on a shoestring budget by future superstar director Nolan. The non-narrative film structure is just as annoying here as in his better-known blockbusters.
