Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life (1995)

Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life DVD

Zeitgeist Films
Directed by Quay Brothers
My rating: 2.5 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Kino)

A man enters a school for servants but has trouble adapting to the strict rules and humiliating exercises. The school is run by a brother and sister, who are also having an incestuous relationship. The man is attracted to the girl and she to him, but that as about as far as it goes. Meanwhile, her brother makes homosexual advances towards him. The film is open to interpretation, but the main themes I got from it involved authoritarianism and sexual repression, and their impact on the human psyche. You might get something different, and so might I the next time I watch it. I prefer the Quay Brother's purely animated short films, but this is better than the even more loosely structured Piano Tuner of EarthQuakes which followed a decade later.
