A white Lutheran church in Omaha, Nebraska, grapples with race relations in the volatile climate of the late 60s civil rights movement. Their pastor is sympathetic to the cause and wants to have an "exchange program" with a nearby black Lutheran church. First, he must convince skeptical council members of the church. They talk about it for the entire movie. Meanwhile, a confrontational black barber spouts off about "the man", Vietnam and just about any other topic that crosses his mind. The exchanges never happen and the pastor is forced to resign, leaving things more or less as they started: segregated and hostile. Not much has changed in the 50 years since the film was made.
