A committed ballerina is chosen for the lead part in her company's next production, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. At first she is overjoyed that all of hard work has payed off, but rivalries with other ballerinas, unwanted advances from the play's director and her overprotective mother's meddling send her into a spiraling nervous breakdown. Director Aronofsky's considerable talents are wasted on what is essentially a lurid teenage melodrama, complete with lesbian sex, female masturbation and an unconvincing CGI transformation into a swan. Unintentionally hilarious at times.
