Army soldier Arthur Kennedy loses his sight in sniper fire. He is sent to a hospital stateside to recover and relearn how to do even the most basic tasks. He gets help from other blinded soldiers, as well as pretty local girl Peggy Dow who falls in love with him. However, he's got a girl waiting back home for him which complicates matters. When he finally does get home, he finds things are not quite as he expected. The love story gets a bit saccharine and overbearing, but it is balanced by a sensitive account of his adaptation to his new life. It even manages to work in a subplot about racism that is quite effective.
