Young Chicago art dealer couple travel to North Carolina to visit a folk artist they are interested in signing. They also visit the nearby family of the husband. The family is portrayed as quirky rednecks who are wary of the man's smart and sexy big city bride. Characterizations are what matter here: the slightly airheaded pregnant daughter, her quiet, moody husband who seems ready to burst into violence at any moment, her suspicious mother and  Gump-ish father. The film walks a fine line between mocking those characters and caring about them, and I'm still not sure which was intended. There is some emotional melodrama to move the plot along, but in the end I was pretty happy to be headed back to Chicago.
