John Garfield returns to NYC after being tortured by Nazis in Spain and spending time in an asylum recovering. He is investigating the mysterious death of one of his former comrades, and the trail leads to Nazis. Maureen O'Hara might be involved, as well as a host of other people who hang out in a posh nightclub. Garfield and O'Hara lack chemistry and their romance drags down the film. The identity of the "man with a limp" is rather obvious so the mystery is not all that involving either. Nonetheless, the story does explore the psychological angle of torture which results in a few interesting scenes, but on the whole rather routine, with a touch of early war propaganda.
