Beware, My Lovely (1952)

RKO Radio Pictures
Directed by Harry Horner
My rating: 3 stars out of 4
IMDb
(Turner Classic Movies)

Compact little thriller with Robert Ryan as a homeless handyman who wanders from town to town doing odd jobs for single women. He ends up at the boardinghouse of Ida Lupino. At first he does his work quietly, but when he thinks Ida is criticizing him slowly goes off the deep end. Before you know it Ida is locked in the house with a raving lunatic. We get only pieces of his back story: he was in the Army, rejected for some reason, did not take it well. Meanwhile, Ida tries to communicate with outsiders to get help, mainly neighborhood kids. The ending is rather abrupt and not particularly satisfying. Nonetheless, a film very much ahead of its time with superb performances by Lupino and Ryan.
