A Place of One's Own (1945)

Directed by Bernard Knowles
My rating: 2.5 stars out of 4
IMDb
(Turner Classic Movies)

James Mason and his wife purchase a large home in the country in which to retire. Only problem, it has been empty for 40 years and is rumored to be haunted. Very slowly, very, very slowly, Mason realizes the rumors are true when his wife's companion becomes possessed by the spirit of a young woman killed exactly 40 years ago. By no means a bad film, but the exposition is glacial, and really not much happens until the final 15 minutes. The house is more turn-of-the-century Victorian than Gothic, so that was disappointing as well.
