The Whip and the Body (1963)

Directed by Mario Bava
My rating: 3.5 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Midnight Choir)

Mario Bava's Gothic tale is a masterpiece of color and lighting. Set in a remote castle, Christopher Lee returns home to a most unfriendly welcome. An old flame is now married to his brother and living there with his father. They find each other alone on a nearby beach and rekindle their masochistic relationship. Lee is brutally killed relatively early in the film, but don't worry he soon reappears as a scowling figure in the shadows. Who killed him? Is he really dead? It's a darkly romantic tale set amidst the starkly lit castle and its environs.
