The Monster (1925)

Metro-Goldwyn
Directed by Roland West
My rating: 2 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Warner Archive Collection)

Johnny Arthur is Johnny Goodlittle, a store clerk and self-taught detective. When a wealthy farmer goes missing he decides to pursue the case. It leads him to an abandoned sanitarium where Lon Chaney is up to his old tricks. Chaney is the sanitarium's former director, and he has kidnapped several of its former residents. The cast stumbles around its interior, with plenty of sliding doors, creepy stairways and lightning flashes in the windows. Chaney has a creepy smile, but not much else is scary, as it leans more towards comedy than horror.
