Mystery of Edwin Drood (1935)

Jealous choirmaster Claude Rains, who spends his off hours in the local opium den, murders his nephew over his lovely student Heather Angel. Suspicion falls on a newly arrived foreigner from Ceylon, whose skin color doesn't help him either. The search for the body turns up empty, and it looks as though Rains will get away with murder. However, his opium habit comes back to haunt him in the end. Filled with typical Dickensian characters and good atmosphere, particularly in the crypt scenes, it's an enjoyable mystery, although the melodramatic aspects do tend to water it down considerably.
