Black Senator James Earl Jones reluctantly becomes president when those above him in the line of secession are killed. At first his advisers won't let him make any decisions, but that changes when he becomes personally involved with a young black teenager accused of murdering a diplomat in South Africa. He puts his reputation on the line and when it turns out he has been mislead must come to terms with his decision. Potentially explosive story of a black man thrust into the presidency is a missed opportunity, with Jones too timid and the subplot of his activist daughter outdated.
