A sixteen-year-old student gets swept off her feet by an older man.. He brings her to classical music concerts, dines her in fancy restaurants and eventually takes her to Paris. He manages to seduce her parents as well as the naive girl. He pays for all of this by some shady real estate transactions and art dealing. After they get engaged, she drops out of school, ruining her chances of getting into Oxford. However, she finds out he is a married man and she is not the first one to fall for his charming ways. A well-made and well-acted film, but too predictable: the screenwriter could learn something about risk-taking from its lead character. Carey Mulligan practically lives and breathes Jenny, a very good performance which deservedly got her a Best Actress nod from the Academy.
