A little black girl falls down a well and disappears. The sheriff of a small, typical American town sends his deputies out to search for her. They follow up a lead of someone talking to her around the time of her disappearance, leading to the arrest of Harry Morgan, a white man. Rumors circulate around town of a kidnapping and murder, leading to race riots. Just when things are about to boil over the little girl is discovered. The town unites behind a huge effort to dig her out. Morgan is quite good as the innocent man, but the production relies too much on amateurs in an attempt to give it a realistic feel. The well rescue scenes go on forever, particularly the "is she dead or is she alive" ending.
