Likeable oaf Paul Giamatti somehow manages to get involved with three different beautiful women over the course of his life, although he is really not suited for any of them. In his youth, he gets a free-spirited blonde pregnant in Rome and marries her, only to find her dead of a drug overdose after she miscarries. Years later in Canada he has become a successful TV producer. He marries a rich Jewish girl, but her superficiality frequently puts them at odds. He falls head over heels for a stranger at his own wedding, and eventually wins her. This girl is an intellectual, and quite frankly out of his league. How she can look beyond his drinking and girl chasing is asking too much of this viewer, after all he showed up at their first date drunk and ends up vomiting in the nearest bathroom. Still, they have a happy marriage, until the above mentioned personality traits rear their ugly head in middle age. In somewhat of a downer, he spends his final years suffering Alzheimer's and being cared for by his children. There is a subplot about a possible murder involving a friend, but it doesn't amount to much and could have easily been left out completely. Nonetheless, the characters are brought to life by talented actors in this broad look at an imperfect life, with many lessons learned along the way.
