Soldiers from France, Scotland and Germany take a break from their trench warfare in WWI to celebrate Christmas together. They sing, drink and have a religious service on Christmas Eve. Their little armistice carries over in to Christmas Day when they bury their dead. News of their activity leaks out via letters they write home which are intercepted by censors. Their superiors do not react kindly, but it does serve to expose the futility of war. Now friends, the troops cannot fight each other and they are sent to other fronts to carry on the fighting. Based on a true event, it still stretches credibility, especially the sight of Diane Kruger with perfect hair and make up in the trenches singing opera. Nonetheless, it is well acted with some gorgeous cinematography by Walther van den Ende.
