A New York gangster travels to LA to take over a business interest. He buys a mansion, with cash, when he spots it from the street and forces the owner to sell, and does the same for a fancy car. He uses his Hollywood contacts to show up on sets during production, where he picks up an aspiring actress. He's married and she happens to be the girlfriend of a gangster friend back home. He gets the bright idea of building a casino in the middle of the desert but doesn't have the money to finish it when it goes over budget. He gets rubbed out by the mob when he can't pay back their loans. Beatty is too lightweight for this character, the violent scenes are almost comical. He does, however, have what it takes to play a sarcastic womanizer, which is what takes up most of the plot of this unappealing film.
