Middle-aged spinster Joanne Woodward still lives at home with mom while teaching at the local elementary school. She allows herself to be picked up by an old classmate for her first sexual experience. However he soon drops her when he finds out she wants more from the relationship. Woodward then thinks she is pregnant but it turns out to be something else. She decides to move across the country to start over, bringing mom along. Somewhat pretentiously directed by Woodward's husband Paul Newman, who lets the camera, and story, get away from him at times.
