A poor Jewish man in Kiev, Russia, stumbles on a wealthy drunk passed out on the streets one cold night and reluctantly brings him to his home. He is rewarded with a job running his farm, where he is resented by the other men. When they find out he is a Jew, he is accused of murdering a boy he had chased off the farm earlier. He is sent to prison without trial where he suffers years of torture at the hands of the brutal guards. When his case gains international attention they plan on releasing him, but he demands a trial anyway to expose them. Long and depressing, the prison scenes take up most of the movie, but well acted by Alan Bates.
