Vivid portrait of 16-year-old high schooler "Precious" and her attempts to make a life for herself and her children. She lives at home with an abusive mother, whose husband has sexually abused her since childhood and fathered both her children. She is unpopular at school due to her massive, overweight frame and aloofness. She escapes through elaborate fantasies involving a teacher or other unreachable men. She is sent to an "alternative school" where she bonds with other misfits under the tutelage of a dedicated teacher who forces them to learn to read and write. A raw, painful journey, difficult to watch at times, but ultimately one worth taking.
