Chronicle of the Allied invasion at Normandy, incorporating documentary footage shot by "combat cameramen" of various nationalities and personal accounts as told by the "regulars". It uses maps to keep us geographically situated in the days, weeks and months following as they make their way across France and eventually to Berlin. Occasionally propagandist, especially the introduction by Eisenhower, but tries hard to stay true to the perspective of the infantry and give a real feel for what it might have been like during those fateful days. Overly dramatic score by William Alwyn is a detriment.
