The New Centurions (1972)

Columbia Pictures
Directed by Richard Fleischer
My rating: 3 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Sony)

George C. Scott is the retiring LA cop showing the ropes to rookies like Stacy Keach. His street smarts have kept him alive for 25 years and he is very popular with the other cops. The plot is episodic but entertaining as they deal with prostitutes, thieves and domestic disputes around the city. However, the long hours, low pay and dangerous work take a toll on their home lives. There are the inevitable tragedies, and at times it starts to become more like a gritty TV show, but fine performances and pessimistic, almost poetic, tone elevate it to one of the better 70s cop movies.
