Return from the Ashes (1965)

A French woman survives a Nazi concentration camp and returns to Paris. She is virtually unrecognizable after her ordeal and is reluctant to reunite with her husband, who thinks she is dead. When they finally do meet in a restaurant, it turns out he is now living with her stepdaughter. She stands to inherit a fortune, and her husband and lover hatch a plan to kill her. It starts out well but becomes an unpleasant love triangle melodrama for much of the running time. The plot twists are entirely predictable and symbolism using a chess game is tired and obvious. Still, it is well acted and handsomely lensed by cinematographer Christopher Challis.
