Soldier Gary Cooper falls in love with nurse Helen Hayes while driving an ambulance in Italy during WWI. Their one night stand turns into vows of marriage when he is sent back to the front. When he is injured it only intensifies. He eventually recovers but decides to desert when he finds out she has gone to Switzerland to have their baby. More tragedy follows. Overly sentimental and melodramatic, but beautifully filmed with inventive camerawork by Charles Lang.
