An officer is sent to investigate the murder of an Army sergeant in the segregated south of early WWII. He interviews potential suspects, which provides the framework for a series of flashbacks in which we learn about the events leading up to the murder. Several people appear to have a motivation to kill the unpopular sergeant, including white officers. The ultimate revelation, however, is somewhat anticlimactic. Well-made and entertaining, but also contains some uncomfortable black stereotypes. Scenes with Patti LaBelle as a blues singer in a nightclub seem like padding. Herbie Hancock provides a funky score.
