Joanne Woodward is a performer in a small-time traveling show. When her boyfriend/manager leaves in the middle of the night with all of her money, she stays with an old family friend and her young adult son. Bored with his goody-goody next door girlfriend, he flirts with the free-spirited but much older Woodward, who tries to keep it Platonic. It works until he comes home drunk one night. However, when he shrugs her off the next day she takes up once again with her abusive boyfriend manager who tries to force her into becoming a stripper. Fascinating, Tennessee Williams-esque portrayal of broken dreams and the dark side of small town America. Joanne Woodward gives a bravura performance as the vulnerable Lila Green.
