Street kids in Seattle, mostly runaways, survive by prostitution, selling drugs, dumpster diving for food and panhandling. Occasionally they are reunited with family members, revealing broken homes caused by drugs, alcohol or crimes. They are soon back on the streets. Social workers and others do their best to give them some direction, but there is only so much they can do. One of the kids ends up taking his own life, the others seem destined to similar fates. Often imitated but never duplicated, this remains the seminal "gritty" street documentary with unforgettable, real characters.
