English gentleman Monty Woolley, on vacation in France during WWII, gets caught as the Germans descend on the country. He agrees to help out some friends by escorting their two young children to safety in England. Their journey through occupied territory is anything but safe, however, and he accumulates more children along the way. They eventually reach the coast but are captured by the Germans before they can cross. He makes a deal with the German officer to complete the journey. The child actors can be cloying, and the Germans are little more than stereotypes, but enough momentum in the story to keep it interesting.
