The Sea Around Us (1953)

RKO Radio Pictures
Produced by Irwin Allen
My rating: 2 stars out of 4
IMDb
(DVD, Warner Archive Collection)

Landmark documentary combines colorful photography with insipid narration for an overview of sea life and its interaction with man. It moves along at a brisk pace, but is poorly organized, jumping from microscopic organisms to larger and larger fish, but also looking at salmon, who are not in the sea at all. It's frequently violent, including the final sequence of the killing of whales in all of its disgusting, bloody glory. The narration often appeals to Biblical language, such as "here is the proof of God" to describe a worm eating another worm, and seems misplaced among all of the carnage on display. Worst of all is man, who delights in spearing, hooking, or harpooning these creatures of God, often just for sport.
